Make a Messy Bun Hat – Free Patterns!

Messy Bun Hats have been a popular trend this winter and we love it! Here are two patterns from Mary Maxim that we wanted to share with you.

Shell Stitch Messy Bun Hat

Supplies:

• Yarn: Mary Maxim Prism, any color, 1 ball
• Hook – H-8

Sizing and Pattern:

• Finished Sizes: Small- 17 inch circumference, Large- 22 inch circumference
• Gauge: 4 sc + 8 rows = 1 inch
• Large shell – 9 dc in indicated sp or st
• Small shell – 5 dc in indicated sp or st
• V stitch – (dc, ch 2, dc) in indicated sp

Directions:

Small (Large)

Ch 36 (48) Sl to join being careful not to twist.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each stitch around.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same sp, skip 2 ch, Large shell in next ch, sk 2, *sc in next sp, skip 2 ch, Large shell in next ch, skip 2 ch, repeat from * around, sl st into first sc. (6 (8) Large shells)

Rnd 3: Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch 2), dc in same sp, ch 2, *skip 4 dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, [V st, ch 1, V st] in next sc, ch 2, skip 4 dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, V-st in next sc, ch 2, rep from* around, sl st into 3rd ch of beg ch 5. (9 (12) V- st total)

Rnd 4: Sl st into ch-2 sp of beg V st, ch 3, 4 dc in same sp, sc in sc, Small shell in v st, sc in ch 1 sp, Small shell in V st, sc in sc, * Lrg shell in V- st, sc in sc, Small shell in V st, sc in ch 1 sp, Small shell in V st, sc in sc, rep from * around, 4 dc in beg V st, sl st into top of beg ch 3 to join. 3 Lg shells, 6 Small shells (4 Lg shells, 8 Small shells)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in same sp, ch 2, * V st in next sc, ch 2, skip 4 dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, V st in next sc, skip 4 dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, V st in next sc, ch 2, rep from * around , sl st into first sc to join. (9 (12) V st)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same sp, Lrg shell in V st, *sc in next sc, Lrg shell in V st, rep from * around, sl st into first sc to join.

Rnd 7: Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch 2) dc in same sp, ch 1, skip 4 dc, sc in next dc, *ch 1, V- st in sc, ch 1, skip 4 dc, sc in next dc, rep from * around, ch 1 , sl st into 3rd chain of beg ch 5 to join. (9 (12) V st)

Rnd 8: Sl st into ch- 2 space, ch 3, 4 dc in same sp, sc in sc, *Lrg shell in V-st, sc in sc , rep from * around, 4 dc in beg sp, sl st in beg ch 3 to join.

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in same sp, *ch 1, V- st in sc, ch 1, sk 4 dc, sc in next dc, rep from * around, ch 1, sl st into 1st sc to join.

Rnd 10: as Rnd 6

Rnd 11: as Rnd 7

Rnd 12: as Rnd 8

Rnd 13: as Rnd 9

Rnd 14: as Rnd 6

Rnd 15: as Rnd 7

Rnd 16: Ch 1, 62 (84) sc evenly around.

Rnd 17-19: Ch 1, sc in same sp, sc in each sp around. Fasten off, weave in all ends.

 

Chunky Titan Bun Hat

Supplies:

• Yarn used: 1 skein bulky weight yarn in white, 1 skein bulky weight yarn in light blue
• Hook size K- 10.5 (6.5 mm)

Sizing and Pattern:

• Gauge: one (dc, ch 1, dc) = 1 inch
• Finished size: Small- 17 inch circumference, Large- 22 inch circumference
• Both sizes: Using desired first color, Ch 24, sl st to join, be careful not to twist. 

Directions:

Rnd 1:  ch 1, sc in same sp and in each st around, join with sl st in beg sc. (24 sc total)

Rnd 2: Ch 4, dc in same sp, skip 2 sts, [(dc, ch 1) twice, dc ] in next st, skip 2 sts, *(dc, ch 1, dc) in the next st, skip 2 sts, [(dc, ch 1) twice, dc] in next st. Rep from * around, join with sl st in top of beg ch 4.  ( 12 ch-1 sps)

 Rnd 3: Change to second color and continue to change colors each Rnd from this point on, Sl st into ch 1-sp, Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1) dc, ch1, dc in same sp, [(dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch 1 sp] twice, *[(dc, ch 1) twice, dc] in next ch 1 sp, [(dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch 1 sp] twice. Rep from * around (16 ch-1 sps) 

(For Small only) Rnd 4: Sl st into ch 1-sp, ch 4, dc in same space, (dc, ch 1, dc) in each ch 1 space around.

Rnd 5-8: As Rnd 4.

Rnds 9-11: Ch 1, sc in same space, sc in each st around (48 sc) After Rnd 11 fasten off, weave in all ends.

(For Large only) Rnd 4: Sl st into ch 1-sp, ch 4, dc in same space, (dc, ch 1, dc)  in next ch 1 sp, *[(dc, ch 1) twice, dc] in next ch 1 sp, [(dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch 1 sp] three times, rep from *around ending your last repeat with (dc, ch 1, dc) in last ch 1 sp. Join with sl st in 4th ch of beg ch 5.

 Rnd 5-8: Sl st into ch 1-sp, ch 4, dc in same sp, (dc, ch 1, dc) in each ch-1 sp around.

Rnds 9-11: ch 1 sc in same space, sc in each st around. (60 sc)
