About 15 years ago Rub-on Transfers were pretty popular in scrapbooking and papercraft and then they just kind of disappeared while washi and stickers took over the scene, but now they’re back and we are loving them!
These new rub-ons have such versatility and elevated style, and they’re so easy to use. 10-15 years ago rub-ons for the most part had 1 layer look to them giving them more of a ‘sticker’ vibe. They were cute in their own way at the time, but as trends and fashion have ‘grown up’ and evolved, the appeal to the styling of rub-ons from the past faded away.
The new rub-on transfers from companies like 49 and Market, AALL and Create, Tim Holtz, Graphic 45, and Simple Stories are layered art that immediately gives your page a collage or art journal feel without the thick layers of paper or paint. Once applied, you are left with a beautiful base layer of thin transfers that you can add to. Think of these rub-on transfers as setting the scene for your layout.
As we begin playing with rub-ons we realized that you can layer rub-ons over one another to make your own collage as well. Also mixing rub-ons with other techniques and media has been fun.
The uses for the rub-on transfers on paper for your cards, scrapbook layouts, and art journals are exciting, but that is just the beginning. These transfers can transform so many items allowing you to make some truly unique gifts and decor.
