DIY Doily Table Runner
Doily crafts have become very popular lately and with good reason. The Crochet Doily is very versatile. It can be sewn, glued, used like a stencil, dyed, added together to make a larger piece and cut up into smaller pieces. We’re quite taken with the trend of Crafting with Doilies and this is one of our favorite projects.
This table runner is made with several doilies of different sizes and colors and stitched together to create one long runner. The stitching of the doilies is done by hand and does not damage the doilies. You can mix old and new doilies together or just start with new (or old only).
If you’d like to have a better color variation I recommend dying new cotton doilies in strong tea to get a older antique look. We carry cotton doilies in 3 different sizes in white and natural. As long as the doilies are cotton with cotton thread they will dye up well with any dyes.
To make this table runner gather your doilies and lay them out in the arrangement you want. A nice look is for them to get smaller at the ends, so put the largest ones in the center. Once you have as you like, simply stitch them together by hand so you are connecting the edges of touching doilies in a couple of places.
One of the nice things about this project is that you can always undo it. Want to make it just for Thanksgiving dinner? That works. It’s easy to take apart later or to add on to if your table gets bigger.
