Choosing the Perfect Beading Needle
Depending on your beading project, you will want to consider which needle you use carefully. Since beading needles come in different sizes and lengths it can be over whelming to know which one to use. However, it usually comes down to personal preference here are some tips to help you choose.
Hard Beading Needles
Vary in length and size these needles are small eye and remain the same width. With the eye of the needle being smaller these needles tend to be harder to thread but is very good for holding thread within the eye while beading. Unlike the Big Eyed Needles these needles have less flex making these a great option for long term. We recommend using these needles for bead weaving, bead looms, small-holed beads, and fine beading thread.
The size of the needle indicates how fine and long it is. With beading the higher the number the finer gauge it is.
• Needle Size 10 is best for 11/0, 8/0, 6/0
• Needle Size 11 best for 13/0, 15/0
• Needle size 12,13, 15 – 13/0 15/0 for very small beads
Big Eyed Needle
Comes in short or long sizes- 2” are most common. Made from special, high-tensile Beadalon stainless steel wire, the eye spans most of the length of the needle, making it easy to thread without eye strain. Fits all sizes of bead cord and is very flexible, making it great for stringing beads individually or from trays. Carefully sharpened for precise use.
What makes this needle different is that it comes to a point at both ends with the eye spans most of the length of the needle, making it easy to thread without eye strain. Fits all sizes of bead cord and is very flexible, making it great for stringing beads individually or from trays. Big Eyed Needles come in short and long sizes but 2” are the most common. This is a great option for thicker threads (silk and nylon) and those who have a hard time stringing beading needles.
The downfall to these needles is they tend to only last for a couple of projects due to bending easily from how flexible they are.
Collapsible Eye Needle
Collapsible Eye Needles are flexible and are particularly nice for stringing beads that have very small holes. Extra-spring wire is kink-resistant and has a specially designed eye that automatically collapses and instantly reshapes when it is pulled through the bead. The large eye is easy to thread and accommodates many sizes of cord.
