Sew this: The Ten-Minute Table Runner

Our Ten Minute Tablerunner View File to Printis a very popular standard for us at Craft Warehouse. It really does take about ten minutes. It’s a great project for beginners. You can create one for every season and for every reason. Most stores carry Ten Minute Table Runner kits with coordinating fabric, so getting your supplies for the table runner will also take ten minutes!

We usually make our Ten Minute Table Runner as shown below, but there are many variations. In order to make it so the ends are not pointed (as shown on the main image):

  • Press as in Step 4, turn inside out again and stitch one end closed. Stitch the other end mostly closed, turn right side out and stitch closed, by machine or hand.

See the bottom of this post for more variations.

Finished size is approximately 40″ x 16″.

Skill Level: Beginner

Supplies:

  • 1/3 yard (12″) fabric for the feature fabric
  • 1/2 yard (18″) fabric for the border/back
  • Sewing machine
  • Matching thread
  • Buttons
  • Thread to match fabric
  • Fabric scissors

Instructions:

  1. Place right sides together. Stitch long edges together with a 1/2” seam.
  2. Press seam away from the center fabric.
  3. Turn right sides out.  You now have a long tube.
  4. Lay flat on the ironing board.  Press so that theme print is bordered evenly on long sides with the coordinating print.
  5. Trim short ends even.
  6. Fold the fabric tube in half lengthwise with the theme print out.
  7. Stitch ½” seam on both short ends of the tube.
  8. Press the seams open.
  9. Turn seams inside to form a point and press in place.
  10. Stitch a decorative button at the edge of the short seam to secure in place and enjoy!

It’s really that simple. You’ll spend more time choosing a button to use for this table runner than making it!

Ten Minute Table Runner Variations:

• Do you want a longer table runner? Determine the length you want it to be and add 1”. For example, I want my runner to be 65” long. My fabric is 42” wide without selvages. I will need an additional 25” of length of both fabrics. I will split the 25” in half and add a 12½” piece to each end of my focus and border fabric.

• The focus fabric doesn’t have to be 12” wide. It can be narrower, making the border fabric wider. The focus fabric can be up to 15” wide using a ½ yard border fabric. This will make the border narrower.

• Trim either side of the focus fabric with contrasting, but coordinating fabric up to 2” wide on each side before sewing it to the border fabric. Again, doing this will make the border narrower.

• Want a wider table runner, but the length of 42” is ok? Increase the yardage of both fabrics, keeping a ratio that you like. For example, ½ yard center fabric and 2/3 yard border fabric.

• Replace the center fabric with blocks pieced to form a 42”- 44” long row.

• Use one block centered, with coordinating fabric equally divided on either side of it for the focus fabric. The block can be another fabric, a single block or an embroidered block.

• The focus fabric can be a border stripe.

• If you want your runner to be quilted, cut batting the exact size of your runner BEFORE you stitch the narrow ends closed. Insert the batting, pin in place and quilt. Or quilt only the center fabric before sewing the runner. Or use fusible batting cut to the finished size and fuse before turning right side out.

• Sew rick rack, lace or other trim across the narrow end or along the edges of the center fabric.

• Stack buttons; use covered buttons; using fabric glue to adhere a non-button item.

• No buttons? Machine stitch the ends in place.

• Don’t want the pointed ends? Press as in Step 4, turn inside out again and stitch one end closed. Stitch the other end mostly closed, turn right side out and stitch closed, by machine or hand.

• Want the ends bordered like the sides? Cut the center section shorter than the border fabric. Find and mark the middle of both fabrics, pin and sew matching the center marks. Turn right side out, press. Press under ¼” on each end. Fold ends up, press and stitch in place.
