Sweet Summer Glow: Watermelon Candle Holder

If summer had a mascot, it might just be a watermelon.
This DIY candle holder turns a simple wood candle stand into the cutest summer accent, perfect for patio tables, kitchen counters, picnic-themed décor, and party centerpieces.

It’s fast, beginner-friendly, and the “seed stamping” trick is ridiculously satisfying.

Paint + tools

Optional: Clear sealer (matte or satin) if you’ll be handling them a lot or using outdoors.

4.5" square candle stand (wood)

Step-by-Step: How to Make a Watermelon Candle Holder

1) Prep the candle stand

If your stand has a brass cup/insert, remove it before painting (pop it back in after everything dries).
This keeps the paint clean and makes the top edge easier to finish.

2) Paint the watermelon sections

  • Paint one face red (this is the “fruit” side).
  • Paint the sides green (the rind).
  • Add a thin white stripe between the red and green sections for that classic watermelon look.

Tip: Two light coats look smoother than one heavy coat.

3) Add “seeds” with a paint pen (the fun part!)

Once the red paint is fully dry, use a black free-style paint pen and stamp seeds by pressing the pen tip sideways onto the red area.

This gives you that perfect seed shape without needing to draw tiny ovals.

4) Let it dry + reassemble

When everything is dry, reinsert the brass cup (if included), then place your votive candle on to

Styling Ideas (so it looks extra “summer”)

  • Make a pair and place them on a tray with faux greenery or picnic gingham
  • Use 3–5 holders as a centerpiece runner down a table
  • Mix with citrus colors (lemon + lime) for a “fruit stand” vibe
  • Add a tiny tag: “Sweet Summer Glow” for gifting

Make It Your Own

  • Swap red for pink for a softer look
  • Add a little shading with darker green on the rind edges
  • Use metallic gold pen instead of black for a glam “watermelon sparkle” twist
  • Paint the base in a solid neutral if you want it to match year-round décor

Paint, blend, and add seed details to make a cute watermelon candle holder. Perfect for summer decorating and handmade gifts.
